lyrics

I make my way down to the brig
With memories not my own
Of days gone by when blackened men
Left anxious ones at home

Caught up in the romance
Of this ancestry of mine
The empty hills resounding with
Refrains of Auld Lang Syne

I hardly noticed how the time
Easily slipped away
‘Til I heard my father’s voice
Upon that fateful day

How easy to explain away
The endless time which fills our days
‘Cause in the end we’ll face the fact
That our lives were full of useless things
It is too late to say
‘I’ll come again another day’
When our loved ones die

I never knew him well enough to shed a tear
Instead I stayed inside my comfort
And behind my fear

Fear of finding out my thoughts
Were empty of the truth
Now I wish I’d given him
Some more time from my youth
